The Nigerian Army is to commence Operation Crocodile Smile to curb militancy, kidnapping, piracy and other criminal activities in the Niger Delta region of the country.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt General Tukur Buratai, who disclosed this at the closing ceremony of the Combat Support Arm week held at the Youth Centre of the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri said after the success of Operation Harbin Kunama in Zamfara and other major exercises, the army will commence Operation Crocodile smile in the South-South.
“Concurrent training activities have been going on in formations and units of the Nigerian Army. After the success of Operation Harbin Kunama in Zamfara state and other major exercises, Operation Crocodile Smile will commence this weekend in the south-south. The aim of the exercise is to practice our forces in the Amphibious and internal security operations in the riverine environment,” the COAS stated.
General Buratai said “the Crocodile Operation will also check criminal activities like kidnapping, piracy, militancy and other forms of criminal activities in support of the civilian authority in the country”.
He reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Army in carrying out its constructional role in a very professional manner and loyalty to constituted authorities, adding that it is a reality that the nature of threats the Army is facing now and in near future is asymmetric, hence the need for all security agencies, especially the military to be proactive.
The COAS said “as we strive towards achieving the goal of restoring peace and development, every arm of the service must continue to explore better ways of carrying out its responsibilities. As we do this, synergy of efforts must be given priority so as to fully maximize the use of scarce resources.
