Bayelsa Police nabs soldier, engineer for kidnapping; Arrests ex-soldier for possession of pistol

In a bid  to keep Bayelsa State free from all manners of crimes and criminalities, Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested and paraded a serving Soldier and an Engineer for kidnapping a lady locked  up in a hotel in Yenagoa.

The command gave the names of the serving Soldier as Lance Corporal Williams Zekena of Nigeria Defence Academy, NDA, Barrack Kaduna State and an Engineer, Tom Yakubu working with the Bayelsa State Ministry of Special Projects

Police said the suspects abducted one  Aya Beauty aged 25 from Warri Delta State and took her to Bayelsa state and locked her up in a hotel demanding  a ransom of N24 million naira from her family.

The command has also arrested an ex- Soldier, one Okechukwu Umeokoro with a military pistol along Zarama road in the East/West road during a stop and search operation .

Parading the suspects, Commissioner of Police, Asuquo Amba said the three   would soon be charged to court as investigations into their crimes are ongoing.

Amba said the command has benefitted tremendously from the community’s involvement in crime fighting through active participation of neighborhood watch and vigilante groups.

He said the command has resolved to work closely with traditional institutions, security stakeholders and Non Governmental Organizations, including Civil Liberties Organization , Youth groups and all relevant agencies to make the state safe from crimes.

On the abduction of Aya Beauty by the alleged serving Soldier and a contractor, Amba said both suspects held the woman in a hotel in Azikoro Village in Yenagoa and demanded the sum of Twenty Four Million as ransom from her family .

According to Amba, thesuspects later reduced the ransom to Eleven million Naira and later to Two hundred Thousand Naira before they ran out of luck.

The Police Commissioner also said the victim was kidnapped on 4th  April, 2017 in Warri and was taken to Bayelsa state for ransom
Amba said before the suspects were arrested by the Police, the fiancé of the victim had given them the sum of Two Hundred thousand Naira and promised to pay them N24m.

On the arrest of Okechukwu Umeokoro by the Police, Amba said he was seen with a military pistol along the East/West Road during a stop and search operation.

Umeokoro, Police said was voluntarily discharged from the Nigeria Army and was attached to 3 Battalion, Warri Delta state.
The suspect, Police said is a native of Anambara state, Nigeria

The suspect who was arrested on the 15th of March, 2017, said he got the pistol during one of his military operations to Sudan and have been using it to commit all manners of crimes to humanites

Amba said during the search, a military Identification Card was discovered; one hand grenade, one handcuff and five rounds of live 9mm ammunitions were also recovered from the suspect.

Speaking to our correspondent one of the suspected kidnappers, Tom Yakubo, a contractor confessed to the crime and said they abducted the lady from Warri in order to collect huge ransom from the family and took her to Bayelsa before police arrested them
Yakubu said he held from Jos, while his accomplice is a native of Southern Ijaw in Bayelsa state

The commissioner who advised sister security agencies to ensure that any dismissed officer does not steal their pistols and ID card including ammunitions, insisted that the suspects would be charged to court after investigations
