The Niger Delta University (NDU), Wilberforce Island owned by the Bayelsa State Government has won the first inter-university political debate/competition for undergraduate students of political science with  some selected Universities.

The Inter University Political Science competition with its  theme, “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) And African Development Agenda” was hosted by the Federal University, Otuoke (FUO)
Some of the selected Universities that part include  University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) and the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Port Harcourt.

The NDU represented by Jonah Pius (lead speaker), Moses Diton, Fano Deseye Jennifer and Orufa Dan Woyengikuro, scored a cumulative 237.7 points to win the trophy while FUO got 233.8, IUE 227.4 and Uniport 225.6.

Co-coordinator of the NDU team, Dr. Philips Okolo and the Head of Political Science Department, Prof. Ambily Etekpe, handed over the trophy to the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Humphrey Ogoni, during a presentation ceremony at the VC’s Conference Room on Wednesday.

Okolo described the debate as fierce, stressing that he had challenged the debating students not to be inhibited by the poor state of infrastructure in the NDU but deliver the intellect and academic content deposited in them by lecturers of the department.

He said he was delighted that the school won the competition despite the challenges of lack of logistics and time constraint as the NDU was midway into semester examinations.

Speaking shortly after the competition, Prof, Etekpe informed that the university would return the trophy with redemption in 2018 when the next edition of the inter-university political debate is expected to hold again.

The VC, who received the trophy in the presence of the university management staff, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Admin), Prof. Samuel Edoumiekumo, Acting Registrar, Mrs.  Effua Berepubo and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences,  Prof. Ibaba S. Ibaba, among others, commended the students for being good ambassadors of the university.
