Economic and socal activities were crippled in Enugu metropolis, Tuesday,  as residents complied substantially with the sit-at-home order declared by various pro-Biafra agitators to mark the 50th Anniversary of the declaration of Biafra by people of old Eastern region in a failed bid to secede from Nigeria.

The anniversary is usually marked on May 30 every year.

Military helicopter hovered around Enugu for the better part of the day, even as the convoy of the State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi was seen patrolling various parts of the city.

Unlike previous anniversaries where members of the various groups, including Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Biafra Zionist Federation (BZF) and Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) poured into the streets in peaceful processions, and the process encountered casualties from police bullets, this year’s event was peaceful but yet the most effective.

All the markets, including popular Ogbete Main Market; all the banks; most public and all private schools; all street shops, and food vendors; and major transporters kept their gates under lock and key.

However, the commercial bank staffers were seen moving in and out of their rear gates and also allowed cash trapped customers to use the automated teller machines (ATM).

Although most schools were already observing mid-term break,  those in session were said to have sent electronic text messages to parents not to allow their wards come to school to avoid any untoward incident.

Police vehicles were seen strategically positioned at every corner of the city to ensure that there is no break down of law and order.

Military personnel mounted several road blocks in all entry and exit points in the state.

The Enugu Police Public Relations Officer  (PPRO), Superintendent of Police, Ebere Amaraizu when contacted said there was no incident as at the time of filing this report.

When asked whether anybody was arrested he said there was no need as nobody presented himself or herself for arrest by possibly engaging in unlawful activity.

Some residents especially business owners said they complied with the sit-at-home order due to fear of the unknown while others said they complied out of self volition to join in the Biafra anniversary commemoration.
