Immediate past governor of Enugu State, Barr Sullivan Chime has declared that those causing problems in All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state are being sponsored to do so.
Chime, who declined to name the sponsors of the crisis, called on security agencies to arrest invaders of the state secretariat of APC, in order to nip in the bud, the growing political violence trying to rear its ugly head in the state.
Speaking at Obioma in Udi local government area of Enugu state during the defection ceremony of former Woman Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Mrs. Oby Nwofor into APC, the former Governor was referring to the invasion of the the APC secretariat on Monday by some people led by the Deputy Chairman,
Adolphus Udeh, to announce the suspension of the Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye.
But a State Executive Committee meeting of the party held on Tuesday, expelled Udeh from the party, and set up a disciplinary panel to investigate the other dissidents.
Speaking on the development during the defection ceremony, Chime said,
“These are people who have been sponsored; they have been sponsored to come and cause trouble in the APC. You see, APC has hierarchy, if anything happens at the state level, you are not happy with it, you don’t take laws into your hand; you appeal against that decision.
“But for people to hire thugs, especially armed thugs, to storm the office, quite unfortunate. But I hope and pray that something is done; if not, 2019 will be real katakata (trouble); if it’s not nipped in the bud now, violence that is what is trying to rear its head,  if government doesn’t nip it in the bud now, we will be heading for trouble in 2019.
“So I call on all the security agencies; Police, Department of State Service, they should take it very seriously, this is not time to be partisan, this is not the time to say oh, this is my friend, this is not my friend, treat these people for what they are, criminals.”
Chime described Mrs. Oby Nwofor as a great mobilizer, who had been the woman leader of PDP in the state for eight years, noting that she would bring her wealth of experience to bear on her new party at the appropriate time.
The Enugu State Chairman of APC, Dr. Ben Nwoye said this of Mrs Nwofor: “Having the honour to receive a woman leader of PDP, eight years, immediate past, is the greatest honour that I have had thus far in our quest to take over Enugu state come 2019. If you look at what is happening today (crowd), women came from all over 260 wards including my ward Amuri (Nkanu East LGA), far away distance. There is no other person who could have done that, other than His Excellency Sullivan Chime when he defected to APC earlier”.
The former PDP woman leader, Mrs. Nwofor told journalists that she had to dump her former party because not only that it was dead, but all the founding fathers had left it and that as a politician desirous of attracting development to her village, local government and state, she had to join a “moving party, the APC.”
