Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, Monday, commissioned a multi-billion naira ultra-modern Secretariat at Ocho-Udo Estate s well as the Ebonyi International Market in Abakaliki.
Both projects cost the government over N34billion.
At the ceremony, Elechi announced the cancellation of the N15 billion bond his government applied for September last year.
Elechi stated that the two projects were to have benefited more than N2.5 billion each from the Bond if it had been accessed.
He explained that the cancellation became necessary not because of the petition by the Speaker of the State Assembly, Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku to President Goodluck Jonathan against the bond.
He said the bond was cancelled due to fear generated by the petition which affected investors’ confidence as well as the passage of time which renders the Bond meaningless as the administration will be leaving office by May 29.
Elechi said the secretariat complex constructed at the cost of over N15 billion would provide conducive environment for workers, noting that it was not enough to train and pay wages to civil servants without commensurate conducive working environment.
He said that although the projects, made up of 11 blocks of three-storey buildings each, internal channelization and landscaping were not yet hundred percent completed but it was better to move in and handle the remaining finishing touches to avoid depreciation setting in.
At the International Market constructed at the cost of N18.6 billion, Governor Elechi said it was conceived to serve traders from the Republic of Cameroon and the old eastern region including Enugu, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Anambra and others.
He also announced that a cargo handling airport was planned for a nearby community, Igbeagu to complement the international market and to serve major towns in the neighbouring Cross River State such as Ikom, Ogoja, Obubra and Obudu. He however stated that the construction of the Airport will be done by the successive administration depending on the priority it accorded the project.
Speaking at the occasion, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Dr. Ifeanyi Ike and the Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Housing, Arch Friday Nwogha stated that International Market sitting on 50 hectares of land has 7070 lock up stores, 15 ware houses, 40 Kiosks, two Banks and four restaurants among other facilities.
Earlier the Head of Service, Mrs. Ugo Nnachi described the ultra modern secretariat as an eloquent testimony of government determination to bring necessary improvement to the citizenry.
She listed some of the achievements of the Elechi-administration to include; the construction of the secretariat, the Staff Development Centre, ICT training of Civil/Public servants and distribution laptop and desk top computers to civil servants.
