Ex-minister, Ojo Maduekwe dies at 71

Ojo Maduekwe,
Ojo Maduekwe,
Immediate past Secretary of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Ojo Maduekwe, has died.
Maduekwe, a one-time Minister of Foreign Affairs, died, late Wednesday, aged 71.
Maduekwe, Wednesday evening, died after he collapsed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on his way from the United States of America.
Maduekwe, who arrived Nigeria after attending the graduation ceremony of a relation, was scheduled to celebrate his wife’s 70th birthday, Thursday.
The senator representing Abia South, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, an ally of the late ambassador, said, Wednesday that the late Maduekwe was on his way from the United States and was billed to attend the wife’s 70th slated for Thursday.
He also confirmed that Maduekwe collapsed at the airport, on his arrival from the United States and was rushed to the Turkish Hospital in Abuja, where he eventually died.

Maduekwe’s Board had thrown its weight behind the Makarfi faction as it had earlier last month expressed support for the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to continue with the May 21 national convention in spite of all reservations.
“In spite of the well-articulated reservations by well-respected and articulate elders and members that the convention should not go ahead, the BoT has decided to support the NWC that our national convention should hold on May 21.
“Secondly, that all the grievances that have been well articulated by well-meaning elders and interest groups would be clearly look into in the process of party reconciliation to see how we can carry everybody along,” the former minister had said in statement.
