An art advocacy and literary group, the ExodusForArt, has congratulated Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, on his emergence as the Governor-elect of Kaduna State following his victory at the April 11 governorship election in the state.

A statement by the trustees of the non-governmental organization, and signed by the group’s President, Mr. ’Tunji Ajibade, read; ‘we have always known that persons such as yourself are what Nigeria needs and we rejoice that at this time when the nation in general has travelled the full cycle, the people of Kaduna State have realized that a selfless, progressive, just and courageous public servant like yourself is what they need to effect the needed turn around in their condition.’

Continuing, the group’s statement said: “More than this, we are elated that a person like yourself who has in your own way contributed enormously to the development of literature in this country has become a political leader at such a high level. We state this because we appreciate the relevance of literature to national development, and that if political leaders would accord literature its pride of place, then the sky would not be the limit for the nation. We know that you are a lover of literature considering the immense contribution you have made with the writing of your epoch-making book, The Accidental Public Servant, which is an invaluable to public record, adds to public knowledge, as well as serves as a means of public education about some salient issues in this nation’s past.

“Aside from the book, we also noted with satisfaction how you have contributed to literature through your articles in some national newspapers all of which has enriched public discourse at various levels and in different quarters including journalism and politics. In this season when it is known that reading culture is poor among Nigerians, the fact that your incisive articles draw thousands to the pages of newspapers or other online publications where they appear is a significant contribution to improving reading culture among Nigerians that we recognize and salute.

“Most significantly was your contribution to literature though your unreserved support for the empowerment of new generation of Nigerian fiction writers through your family’s support for an annual national literary workshop the first of which ExodusForArt hosted in 2013. For us in the literary community, that a person of your caliber who has love for literature has become a political leader in a nation where leaders give scant attention to this aspect of the nation’s life makes your emergence as the governor-elect in Kaduna state a reason to celebrate, while we hope that your emergence will translate into greater support for literature,” read the congratulatory statement.

The organization therefore wished the el-Rufai ‘a successful tenure as the days draw closer for you to assume the mantle of leadership in Kaduna State.’
