FCT Minister canvasses emergency awareness; Commends NEMA Relief Services

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has appealed to FCT residents to collectively and individually adopt measures that eliminate or reduce risks of disasters in our communities.

Malam Bello made this call in Gwagwa, Abuja during the official presentation of relief materials by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to victims of the recent flood disaster and other disasters in some parts of FCT during the year.

Bello who was represented by the Secretary, Area Council Services Secretariat, Adamu Abubakar Bappah, said, while this administration is prepared, at all times, to provide succour to victims of disasters, it is expedient for residents to keep themselves out of harm’s way by adopting such precautions as avoiding illegal constructions on waterways and risks of fire outbreaks among others etc.

He thanked the Director– General of NEMA, Engr. Mustapha Maihaja, for the agency’s responsiveness to emergency situations in the country in general and FCT, in particular and pledged that provisions would be made in next year’s budget to improve the FCT FEMA’s ability and capacity to deal with emergency situations.

While receiving the relief materials which were categorized into food items, non-food items, building materials and livelihood restoration tools on behalf of those affected, the Minister assured that the items will be distributed accordingly to all those that were affected to help them rebuild their lives.

Earlier in his remarks, the DG NEMA, Engr. Maihaja, appreciated the FCT Minister for his cooperation, adding that the agency is determined to strengthen its coordination capacity with stakeholders with a view to ensuring efficient and effective disaster management in the country.

While commiserating with the victims of the flood disaster, the DG NEMA stated that the relief items have been provided on behalf of the Federal Government in order to alleviate the immediate problems of the affected persons.

He gave a breakdown of the food items donated to include 450 bags of rice, 450 bags of beans, 250 bags of millet and 200 cartons of powdered milk among others.

Other non-food items, according to him, are 1000 pieces of blankets, 1000 pieces of mosquito nets, 500 pieces of foam mattresses, 200 cartons of bath soap and 600 pieces of women and children’s wear.

The flood disaster victims, according to him, have also been presented with 500 bags of cement, 300 bundles of roofing sheets, 50 packets of zinc nail, 700 pieces of ceiling board, 3 bags of three inches nails and 50 pieces of sewing machines to help rebuild their damaged houses and kick start their lives.
