The one PHC per ward programme in Nigeria, initiated by the All Progressives Congress, APC,-led administration in partnership with state governments is getting impetus as Borno State Government commissioned the pilot project in the state at Galtimari Ward of Jere Local Government Area.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole who commissioned the pilot project over the weekend said that the initiative was to ensure access to healthcare delivery by all Nigerians.

He said: “what we are doing today is implementing universal goal, to make healthcare accessible to all our people. What we are saying is that we want everybody irrespective of whether educated or not, irrespective of whether they have resources or not, irrespective of where they live, to have access to quality health care and this commissioning today is one simple manifestation of the achievement of the goal.”

The Minister said that the programme was to ensure that no Nigerian is deprived of accessing quality health care within 5 kilometres radius whether he has money or not.

Adewole said that apart from providing healthcare to everyone irrespective of his or her status, the concept would provide employment, stimulate growth of pharmaceutical industries as well as cementing the good relationship between the government and the citizenry.

“I want to pledge our support that whatever we can do in terms of building capacity and training, we would do in partnership with you,” he said.

The Minister commended the Borno State Government for keying into the programme despite the security challenges in the state.

In his remarks, the Governor of Borno State, Hon. Kashim Shettima, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Alh. Usman Mamman Durkwa said that Borno state had gone through challenges in the last five years which led to destruction of health facilities in the state.

He stressed that with support from stakeholders and partners, the state is making efforts to rebuild the healthcare facilities destroyed.

He said “Borno state has 311 political wards in which it lost quite a number of critical infrastructure including health facilities. The task ahead of us is not only building, renovating or equipping the health facilities but also getting the required personnel to provide 24 hours service with linkage to referral secondary level facilities”.

He commended the partners who were working hard with the state government in rebuilding not only health facilities but also other infrastructure in the state.

“May I inform you that Borno State would continue to pursue this goal of achieving universal health coverage through the one –PHC per ward approach and would seek further support from the stakeholders and partners,” he said.

Earlier, the Hon. Commissioner of Health, Borno State, Dr. Haruna Mshelia said that despite the challenges of human resources in the state, the facility commissioned has full complement of staff required for the service.
He said that the facility has staff quarters attached, electric and solar facilities as well as water supply.
