Fuel tanker fire wreaks havoc at Idimu, Lagos

Property worth several millions of naira including over 30 shops and dozens of cars were lost overnight in a tanker fire that created panic in the Idimu area of Lagos.

The inferno started around 11 O’clock last night and was caused by two tanker drivers struggling for the right of way at top speed, one of which fell and spilled its diesel content into the drainage. The driver other tanker expectedly didn’t stop while the driver of the fallen tanker bolted away.

The fire raged until the early hours of this morning when it was eventually quenched by men of the Lagos State Fire Service.

Men of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the Nigeria Police, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) also arrived promptly to assist and to undertake rescue operations.

The incident happened three days after a tanker loaded with fuel veered off a bridge at the nearby Iyana Ipaja around 12:58 a.m. and exploded, burning a line of shops covering over 50 metres by the road side.
