Gov. Tambuwal challenges school Principals to brace up to rescue the education sector

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State Tuesday urged Principals of Public and Private Secondary Schools in the state to improve on their efficiency and effectiveness in the management of the schools as part of efforts to salvage the education sector from collapse and avoid the disastrous consequences of such collapse.

In his speech at a workshop tagged “Retooling Education In A State Of Emergency: The Role Of Principals,” which was attended by Education Secretaries and Principals of both private and public schools, Tambuwal said education in the state was characterised by low community participation, high dropout and wastage rates and low level of information communication technology, ICT.

The sector, according to him, also has the record of poor teachers’ morale and motivation,low enrollment, transition and completion rates, poor quality products characterised by low percentage rate in the national examinations, among others.

While stressing the pivotal role of School Principals in the management and administration of post primary schools, the governor charged them to take responsibility of ensuring that actual teaching and learning was carried out in their schools, in addition to control of material resources, teachers and students placed under their custody.

The guest speaker at the occasion and former Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodio University Sokoto, Professor Riskuwa Shehu, revealed the extent of decay in secondary schools describing school Principals as major stakeholders in efforts to solve the disturbing trend.

Prof. Shehu revealed that most of the secondary schools under their leadership scored as low as 4 percent in school record keeping, teachers lesson plan, movement of staff, admission record, student record and account book keeping.

According to Riskuwa Shehu, most of the schools scored 8 percent in record of revenue generation while nineteen of the secondary schools have no record of the existence of Guidance and Counseling offices.

There is also non existence of Parent Teachers Associations, PTAs, and School Base Management Committees in some of the secondary schools.

Shehu, who is the chairman of the state’s schools assessment committee, said it was the responsibility of the Principals to keep record of the activities of the schools and appealed to the Principals to be more proactive in the discharge of their responsibilities.

He explained that what was needed to bring about the desired change in the system is attitudinal change by all the stakeholders.

He also appealed to the Ministry of Education to fulfill its obligation of ensuring provision of welfare for staff and particularly the Principals so as to achieve good results.

In his remark, the Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Muhammad Jabi Kilgori
said there was a plan to put in place a code of ethics and performance for school Principals as they would consequently be rewarded for any record of good performance.
