From RUTH DAVID,Bauchi
Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi state has charged women in the state to use their positions to promote peaceful coexistence in Bogoro and Tafawa Balewa local government areas of the state.
Mohammed Abubakar gave the charge when the association of daughters of Zaar from the two local governments paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Bauchi.
The Governor noted that women and youths are the bedrock of the society, hence his administration will give priority to their affairs in order to make them self-reliant and independent.
He said,”What the state has experienced in the past regarding peace is a very touchy situation. We need an association like yours that will unify and engender peace in state because it is only with peaceful coexistence that a society can develop.
“Concerning developing the state, my administration will mechanize agriculture with a view to attracting women and youths to the sector because agriculture is key to our developmental effort,” he said.
According to him,”the days of free lunch are over in Nigeria as there is a dwindling of revenue from the federation account, so we have to explore other sectors like agriculture to boost our internally generated revenue and create jobs for the unemployed in the state”.
In her address, the chairperson of the association, Mrs Tabita Sambo stated that they were at the Government House to congratulate the governor over his success during the election and to support his administration to develop the state.
She then appealed to the governor to increase the appointment of qualified women into his cabinet, pointing out that it will uplift the standard of women in the state.
It could be recalled that Bogoro and Tafawa Balewa local government areas of the state for sometime have been the flash points of communal crises in the state.
