Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has ordered the sack of 344 newly recruited lectures and staff of Rivers State Polytechnic, while threatening to sack non-indigenes among 13,200 teachers.

This was contained in a directive issued by the Rivers State Ministry of Education and disclosed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Rivers State Polytechnic, Innocent Ogbonnaya Nwanwo.

The affected staff members are newly recruited staff and lecturers during the administration of immediate past Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

Also affected is the Rector of the polytechnic, Sir Obianko Worlu Elechi, who has been directed to proceed on compulsory leave.

The statement reads in part: “The recent employment exercise we had at the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori has been cancelled.

“The reason is that the government needed to review the process of their employment, the process that brought in the newly employed people (don’t forget, they have not started work) has been called off; it has been terminated by the state government.

Right now, they don’t have a job here in the Rivers State Polytechnic. Technically speaking, that is the truth. The Rector is on leave; he was asked to proceed on leave.”

Consequent upon this development, the Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress [APC] has expressed sadness, saying that Governor Wike’s action is a manifestation of “obsession to conduct a vengeful vendetta and reprisal against every good legacy left behind by his predecessor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.”

The APC claimed that “the employment of the sacked lecturers and staff by the Amaechi administration which commenced as far back as 2013 followed all due process as they were painstakingly taken through rigorous examinations and several documentations including biometric capture to ease their working life.

“The APC condemns this anti-people development by the Wike-led caretaker government of Rivers State,” continued the APC.

The APC, therefore, “continue to hope and pray that this interregnum of a government comes to an early end as it is meant to. We trust in the window God has left open for the good people and residents of Rivers State in the APC.
