At least two policemen were killed in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state by unknown gunmen last weekend.

Although there was no clue as to why the gunmen struck, Global Patriot Newspapers gathered that, the hoodlums who stormed the police Station in the area on the fateful day, opened fire and killed the Police Inspector and a Corporal on duty.

The State’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Cordelia Nwawe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police who confirmed the incident to this reporter on the telephone declined to give further details but politely said that, “A suspect is in custody. We will not be able to give details until investigation is concluded.”

The identities of the slain police personnel could not be ascertained as at press time but the PPRO confirmed that an Inspector and a Corporal were killed adding that, the police would continue with their work of protecting lives and property in the state.

It would be recalled that, Amasaba community in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area had been in a protracted communal tussle with Ikot Akpanudo community in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area since last year, with lives and properties lost, and also recently, the community stakeholders had warned oil firms to stay clear of the area owing to what they described as, marginalization and non-adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached between them and the oil companies operating in the area.

But Chief M.W. Ujile, a community leader in the area who expressed shock at the incident could not imagine what may have informed the gruesome killing of the policemen by the armed men.

According to him, “the situation is just as you have said. We don’t know what actually happened.”
