With barely a month left in office, President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed the Inspector General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba with immediate effect.
Abba’s dismissal from office was announced Tuesday afternoon by President Jonathan Special Assistant on Media, Dr. Reuben Abati, who also revealed that the sack was with immediate effect.
Abati, who announced this via his Twitter handle did not however give reasons for the sudden sack, just as he directed Abba to formally hand over to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, in an Acting capacity.
“President Jonathan sacks IGP Suleiman Abba, appoints DIG Solomon Arase as Acting IGP with immediate effect,” Abati tweeted.
Until his new appointment Arase was the Head of the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department.
Arase who holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Law, as well as Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Political Science and Strategic Studies, is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Defence College.
Arase who was earlier tipped to succeed former IGP MD Abubakar, has been described by his colleagues as a top policeman with superior intelligence strategy than Abba, but he lost out at the last minute.
