A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a 27-year-old mechanic, Afeez Bello, to six months imprisonment for stealing 30 litres of diesel valued at N30, 000.

The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict N10, 000 option of fine.

Sadiq advised the convict to desist from committing crime. He said that the sentence would serve as deterrent to others.

The convict, who resides at Jabi Daki-biyu, Abuja, was convicted on a count charge of theft upon his plea of guilty.

He, however, begged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying that he committed the crime due to hunger.

The prosecutor, Mr Zannah Dalhatu, had told the court that Felix Tor and Aondohemba Ikyernum of Abraham Plaza, Utako in Abuja reported the matter at the Utako Police Station on Jan. 6.

Dalhatu said that the complainants said on Jan. 5, the convict dishonestly stole thirty litres of diesel valued at N30, 000.

He said that during police investigation, the diesel was recovered.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.
