NEMA begins work on rehabilitation of North-east

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) disclosed, Thursday, that it has began working out modalities towards the rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their communities in the North east.

Director General of the agency, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Sidi, said with the president’s deadline to the military to end the insurgency by December, NEMA is also working at commencing the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the North-east in order to move the IDPs back to their communities immediately the military operation ends.

Sidi made this disclosure in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital during the presentation of food and non-food items and relief materials to insurgency and flood victims in the troubled North-eastern state.

He said the Buhari led administration has constituted a presidential committee charged with the responsibility of identifying the destroyed communities and their immediate needs for urgent attention as soon as military certify the safety in the war devastated areas.

The committee according to him will also work out ways of restoring the means of livelihood the inhabitants so as to contribute to their quota to nation building as they return to their various communities.

He commended the Yobe State Government for integrating the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) into the immediate community instead of resorting to opening up conventional camps which are prone to so many social ills.

The DG who commended the synergy between NEMA and the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), called on other philanthropists to partner the two agencies in efforts aimed at improving the living conditions of the displaced persons.

The Yobe State governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu, thanked NEMA for the gesture and assured that the materials will be distributed evenly to the IDPs and called for sustained assistance in times of need.

He lamented that due to the insurgency, the state government was forced to establish IDP camps to house the displaced persons, an initiative that has gulped N800 million so far.

He however appealed to philanthropists, individuals, corporate bodies and non-governmental organisations to emulate NEMA by coming to the aid of the IDPs in the state and beyond.

The DG in company of the state’s Deputy Governor, Abubakar Aliyu, visited the IDPs at the Pompomari camp in Damaturu the state capital which currently has a total population of 4211persons.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Director of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), Alhaji Idi Jidawa, said since the establishment of the Pompomari IDPs camp, there has been 38 births, seven deaths and eight marriages.

He also said the camp has 128 breast feeding mother while 91 persons with various ailments have so far been referred to various hospitals across the state, neighbouring Borno as well as Kano State.
