OMMATA warns Enugu govt official against imposition of unpopular leadership on Ogbete market
The President of Ogbete Main Market Traders Association (OMMATA), Hon. Temple Ude has warned officials of Enugu state government against imposition of unpopular leadership on the Association.
Ude, accompanied by other executive members told journalists during a press conference in Enugu that a particular member of the association from the same senatorial district (Enugu North) as the State Governor,
Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, was sowing seed of discord in the market.
Hon. Ude, who is also the Special Adviser to the State Governor, Ugwuanyi, on Market Development, alleged that the marketer (name withheld), who he had earlier appointed as ex-officio of OMMATA executive, was using some shadowy figures in government with a view to creating the impression that there was crisis in the market.
“The game plan is to create crisis in order to pave the way for the state government to dissolve the existing executive and impose a caretaker committee that will eventually return the particular marker as the new president of the Association, simply because he hails from the same area as the governor.
“We need peace and calmness in Ogbete market, this is where we earn our pension and gratuity; anybody who is nursing the idea of imposing unpopular leadership on Ogbete traders is bringing crisis because the traders will never support the impostor,” he said.
Ude, who is also the Assistant Secretary of South East Traders Association, and Chairman Enugu Traders Association, stated that anybody who is interested in becoming the chairman of OMMATA should begin now to campaign ahead of April 2018, when the tenure of the current executive will expire, and when there will be free and fair election to usher in new leadership.
He said that he believes that some of the government officials colluding with the “disgruntled trader” from Nsukka zone in order to create artificial crisis in the leadership of the market association, were doing so without the governor’s knowledge.
“I’m sure that the governor we know will not use his position to influence the election of market traders. He is the Governor of Enugu state who we know to be open minded and who believes in fairness, equity and due process, and we are fully in support of his administration.
“It’s noteworthy to mention that under my leadership, we organized the first ever solidarity for any sitting government in this part of the world which held on June 15th 2017.
“Again Enugu traders have never had it rosy as the amiable and God fearing Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has apart from the ongoing grants to many traders in the State, donated the sum of N20 million to Enugu
traders as further support for their welfare,” he said.
