Police Secondary School to start in Gombe

As part of its strategic crime prevention measures, the Gombe State Police Command says it will soon start a Police Secondary School in Nafada Local Government Area of Gombe State.

According to the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Austin Iwar, the effort is in collaboration with the Gombe state Government which supported and donated a completed school in Nafada for the commencement of academic activities.

The Commissioner stated this in Gombe Friday, when he hosted the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police in charge of Criminal Intelligence and Investigation, Force Headquarters Abuja who also doubles as the Supervising DIG, North-East geo-political zone, Hyacinth Medugu Dagala who was in Gombe as part of his tour of the six states in the North-East.

The Police Commissioner stated that, “This will be the first Police Secondary school in the North-East. The Force Education Officer has already conducted an initial assessment of the school facilities and we have commenced the process for legal transfer of the school”.

Mr. Iwar, who stated the Command’s appreciation of the effort of the Federal Government and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in providing adequate logistics to the Police however appealed to the DIG to assist the Command to address some of its major challenges, foremost among which is inadequate manpower.

He explained that the Command suffers inadequate manpower occasioned by too frequent transfers out of the command without commensurate replacements.

In his words, “more than 100 SPO’s and 300 Inspectors and rank and file have been transferred out of the Command without commensurate replacement”.

He regretted that as at 9th September, 2015 when he took over the Command, the strength of Gombe State Police Command stood at 5,055 but that as at present, the strength of the Command stands at 4,565 which he said is grossly inadequate in servicing a population of close to 3 million.

In his remark before going into closed door meeting with the men and officers of the Command, the DIG, Hyacinth Medugu Dagala, stated that he was going round the Commands in the North-East to commend the efforts of men and officers and to also charge them to step up crime prevention strategies.

“We are actually out to tell our men that they have been doing well and to also ask them to step up their efforts in crime prevention strategies”, he stressed .
