No fewer than 12 people are feared dead in Benin City, the Edo State capital, following renewed violent clashes between rival cult groups in the capital city.
The cult war between members of Eiye confraternity, Black Axe and Maphite groups reportedly “claimed over twelve lives” around Second east circular area of the State capital.
It was gathered that trouble started for the cultists after a disagreement over the beating to death of a member of one of the groups at a polling centre in Benin City during the April 1 state Assembly elections.
The Maphite member who was said to have been beaten to death during the incident reportedly sparked off protests which spread to the town as members of his group vowed to avenge his death.
The crisis took a different dimension when a Black Axe man was mistakenly killed in Zabayo road by Stadium Road.
The said Black Axe man was said to have left Aras, opposite office barrack on Airport road after attending a birthday party when he was attacked and killed by his assailants.
The State police spokesman, DSP Stephen Onwochei said he was yet to be briefed on the matter assuring that he would get in touch with the Divisional Police Officer of the Division which oversees the area soonest
