Rivers sets up panel of inquiry on sale of state properties, contract awards

Governor Nyesom Wike has set up a seven-man panel of inquiry headed by Hon. Justice George Omeregi to investigate the administration of former Governor Chibuike Amaechi with respect to the sales of valued assets and other related matters.

Governor Wike while inaugurating the Committee, Friday in Government House, Port Harcourt, said the panel, which is in line with Section 2(1) of Rivers State laws of 1999, has one month to submit its report.

The mandate given to the panel is to investigate the sale of the following: Omoku 150 MW gas turbine, Afam 360 MW gas turbine, Trans-Amadi 136 MW gas turbine and the Eleme 75 MW gas turbine.

The panel will also investigate the sales of Olympia Hotel, the execution of the Mono-rail project, non-execution of the Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte Specialist Hospital after the payment of Thirty-nine million and two hundred thousand dollars to the contractor.

The Commission will also investigate the disbursement and use of the Rivers State Ministry of Agriculture credit guarantee scheme fund of N2billion and the withdrawal of N96 billion from the State Reserve Funds The panel is also mandated to ascertain the circumstances of the sales of the four gas turbines and to identify the purchasers and also confirm whether the transaction was conducted with transparency.

The panel is also expected to make recommendations for the recovery of the proceeds of sales from the gas turbines, recovery of all sums of money unlawfully disbursed in respect of the Justice Adolphus Karibi Whyte Hospital and the recovery of all sums of money unlawfully withdrawn from the Rivers State Reserve Fund and any other findings they consider appropriate.

The governor said the panel has the right to sit anywhere it considers necessary within the State.

Mrs Florence Fiberesima is to serve as secretary to the commission while Dr Zaccheaus Adango is to serve as counsel to the panel.

Other members of the panel are: Dr. Edith Chukwu, Chief Monday Ekekenta, Rev. Canon Alex Usifo and Elder Ignatius Piegbara.
