Sokoto government will establish a new medical school, an infectious diseases hospital and a state-of-the-art renal and cardiac centre, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has revealed.
Speaking at the opening of the 58th meeting of National Council on Health in Sokoto Thursday, Tambuwal said the new health centres will provide training and research, and will complement existing health facilities across the state.
He said his administration has introduced other policies that have impacted positively on the health sector of the state.
One of such, according to him, is the introduction of the community midwifery scheme to train more midwives and traditional birth attendants who will serve at community levels in all parts of the state.
“This programme, will in due course be expanded to essentially achieve sustainable reduction in maternal, infant and child morbidity and mortality in Sokoto state,” the Governor added.
He said the state government has intensified health surveillance and other prevention mechanisms which have resulted in Sokoto being certified as polio, ebola and lassa fever free.

He said the state government has also entered into a partnership agreement with the Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) for specialised trainings for improved quality of care and universal healthcare.
“The areas include manpower training, health services delivery, rural outreach programme, road traffic accident and emergency response care and primary healthcare coverage,” Tambuwal added.
In his remarks, the state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Balarabe Shehu Kakale, said due to the commitment of the present administration and its partners, the number of children immunised against polio and other childhood killer diseases has increased significantly.

In another development, Hajiya Mariya, wife of Governor Tambuwal, has pledged to sponsor the education of 700 girls annually to enable them acquire quality education for a brighter future.
This, she said. will be done in collaboration with the Sokoto state ministries of education, women affairs and the state SDGs office.
Speaking at an event organised to mark the international women’s day at the Milton Keynes College in the United Kingdom, Mrs Tambuwal said her intervention will target girls from economically-disadvantaged families
Represented by Dr Asma’u Wali, Mrs. Tambuwal pledged to encourage parity between male and female genders in Sokoto state.
“Parity begins with education. Without an education it is far more difficult to have a fulfilling and fulfilled life. Without access to education there’s less opportunity to earn more and leave behind a life of poverty,” she said.
According to her, “I want to see an end to gender gaps in my country as I know you all want to see a similar end to gender gaps here in the UK,” she said
She called on employers to support parity by paying men and women the same pay for the same work. She raised her concern on why sectors dominated by women are low paid.
Hajia Mariya called on parents and guardians to encourage their children to become professionals.
She thanked the Principal of Milton Keynes College, Dr Mills for giving her the opportunity to speak at the event, and also urged everyone to support the pledge for parity.
