U.K offers to assist FG fast track development of N/Delta region

The British Government, weekend, expressed its preparedness to partner with the Federal Government with a view to speeding up development of the Niger Delta Region of the country.

Making the offer during a courtesy visit to the office of the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Usani Usani in Abuja, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Paul Arkwright said his government ready to join hands with the Federal Government and other development partners so as to ‘place the Niger Delta region on the global map of massive development.’

The envoy who disclosed that he was at the ministry to enquire about key priority projects in the region, said the United Kingdom was ‘gratified with recent successful and credible elections as well as the smooth transition of power in Nigeria.’

The High Commissioner who described region as a ‘critical part of Nigeria ,’ said, his government ‘is poised to achieving new targets set to boost uncommon opportunities that will close existing development gaps in the oil rich region.’

Responding, Usani expressed satisfaction with the offer and commended the British government for what he termed ‘massive support for the democratic process of Nigeria and in the fight against insurgency.’

He pleaded with U.K not to withdraw support to the nation especially ‘in the area of boosting Nigeria’s politics, product and industry as well as its assistance as it pertains to regulatory institutions.’

He also stressed the need for government of British to help secure the nation’s badly polluted environment by aiding to upgrade the existing environmental standard and procedure that is already in place.

Usani told the British envoy that while Nigeria is working tirelessly to diversify from oil to agriculture, ‘it would be highly appreciated if U.K tenders professional support in this regard as well as help in convincing the World Bank to key into the vision.’
