United Progressive Party calls for urgent implementation of 2014 National Conference recommendations; Laments ‘severe economic difficulties’

Chief Chekwas Okorie

The United Progressive Party (UPP) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly to urgently implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference, the hosting of which, it said, cost Nigerian tax payers more  than N7 billion.

The call was made in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party held in Abuja on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

Signed by the National Chairman of the party, Chief Chekwas Okorie and the National Secretary, Alhaji Sadeeq Masalla,  the UPP ’s NEC in the communiqué also lamented the slow  pace of governance under President  Buhari and the severe economic difficulties being faced by Nigerians, noting that despite modest successes recorded in the fight against corruption, jobs are being lost rather than being created while  Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) are shutting down in large numbers.

The party recommended full payment of internal debts including debts owed to workers and pensioners as a means of reflating the economy and increasing productivity, insisting also that contractors who have earned certificates for jobs done must be paid their legitimate earnings.

It also expressed displeasure with the lopsidedness in the appointment of Nigerians into critical  public offices by President Buhari, stressing that the Federal Character provision in the Nigerian Constitution has been brazenly breached, an attitude which it said cannot encourage the growth of nationhood and patriotism.

While praying for the speedy recovery of President Buhari to enable him resume his duties as President/ Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the UPP commended Buhari  for following due process as prescribed by the Constitution of Nigeria in handing over the reins of Government to Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as Acting President for the period he is out of the country for medical treatment.
