The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba, has described a University as a place for originality, creativity and innovation, geared towards providing solutions to challenges confronting society.
Addressing the Graduate Assistants and Assistant Lecturers of the University on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the University’s Multipurpose Hall, Professor Nwajiuba stated that a University is a collection of thinkers searching and promoting truth and knowledge, which when imbibed and implemented would lead to development of society and humanity.
Bemoaning the decadence that is ravaging Nigerian Universities, the Professor of Agricultural Economics cautioned Nigerian academics to avoid academic laziness and the easy road of using their positions to unduly feather their financial nests, as that would ultimately led them to a dead end. Rather, the Vice Chancellor challenged them to embark on thorough and well thought out productive research and other academic works to measure up with their peers in the international community, adding that it would improve their academic status and the society at large.
He said: “A University should be a critical mass of right thinking people that will bring positive changes to society. Unfortunately, many academics are in the teaching profession today because they failed in other areas.”
Professor Nwajiuba challenged the budding academics of the University to aim for the sky in their academic pursuits in order to soar like eagles in their respective fields and every other aspect of life, adding that they should accept the challenge of publishing their academic works in high impact journals like Thompson Reuters’ rated journals instead of going the easy road many Nigerian academics are presently towing.
