An Abakaliki Magistrate Court has remanded one 24-year old Jacintha Ewa Omiko in the federal prisons for causing the death of her co-wife, Ginika Gabriel.

Our reporter learnt that the deceased was pregnant with an 8-months old baby before she was hit with a kitchen stool by the accused which led to her untimely death on January 28th this year.
A One-Count charge preferred against Omiko in Charge No. MAB/111/C/2017 said the offence is punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 33 Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

The Court, presided over by Magistrate Olughu Nnachi ordered that the accused be remanded in the custody of the Abakaliki Federal Prisons and the case file transferred to the State’s Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP.

It was gathered that trouble started at their Akpoha residence in Afikpo North Local Government Area of the State when the last son of the deceased defecated along the passage of their two-room apartment while his late Mother was cooking in the kitchen.

According to a statement deposed to at the Court by one of the witnesses, the accused had complained bitterly to the deceased to remove the faeces littered along the passage by her son but waited for response to no avail.

“She then approached her (co-wife) in the kitchen and said she has been warning her about the manner in which her kids litter faeces around the compound but she has never heeded to her warnings. As an argument ensued, they both exchanged blows and Jacintha (the accused) rushed for a wooden kitchen stool with which she hit her on her head and tummy. The victim collapsed and died instantly”, read the statement in part.

It was further gathered that it took the efforts of youths and women from the area that raised an alarm for the accused to be arrested and handed over to the Police as she had attempted to flee the village.

The body of the victim has been deposited at the Mater Miscrecordia Hospital Afikpo for autopsy.
