Over fifteen women groups in Zambuk Community of Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State have mobilized themselves as vanguards for promoting peace and security in their community and other parts of Northern Nigeria.

The women who gathered in the palace of the District-Head of Zambuk, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman, for their end of the year meeting pledged to use their positions in the society to encourage peaceful coexistence among the diverse people of the area.

One of the Speakers, Professor Fatima Sawa, the Provost of the Federal College of Horticulture Dadin-Kowa and who is also a women leader in the community commended women in Zambuk for uniting to ensure that the community enjoys the present prevalent peace that has eluded many communities in the North, especially the North-East. She suggested that advocacy and awareness of women should be intensified if the desired goal is to be achieved.

Earlier, Director of Planning in the Gombe state Ministry of Women affairs, Mallam Shuaibu Musa said the United Nations charter on promoting women engagement in peace in Northern Nigeria because of the incessant crises that have been ravaging northern Nigeria.

He said the resolution of the crises has five pillars which include prevention, prosecution, protection, participation and promotion, which has made it mandatory that all acts of violence against women are prevented from taking place in Nigeria and which means that the concept of preaching peace should start in every sector of the Nigerian society.

Another concept he said was that of engaging women in conflict resolution contrary to what was obtained in the past where women are not engaged in committees of investigation or resolving crises.

Speaking earlier, the paramount ruler and District-Head of Zambuk, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman had stressed the importance of women participation in the rulership of the domain.

He said some of his council advisers are women who have made meaningful contributions to the development of the area. He said the women in the area already divided themselves into different sectoral committees such as health, education, politics, Agriculture, entrepreneureship among others and have been doing great things to engage women as peace makers in the society.

All women from all the various committees spoke on their activities and also made their various demands which they feel are important to create peaceful environment not only in Zambuk but the entire Northern Nigeria.
