
In a bid to protect its customers from falling victim to fraudulent activities, Wema Bank Plc has initiated an anti-fraud campaign aimed at curbing fraudulent actions perpetrated through wallet accounts and fintech partners.
As a leading player in digital innovation and a key enabler in Nigeria’s fintech landscape, Wema Bank facilitates the operations of numerous fintechs across the country by providing third-party wallet accounts. However, the bank has observed a surge in fraudulent inflows into these accounts, prompting decisive action against fintech partners implicated in fraudulent activities.
Oluwole Esomojumi, Wema Bank’s Chief Audit Executive, emphasised the importance of the anti-fraud campaign in protecting customers and equipping them with the knowledge to identify evolving fraud tactics. Esomojumi reiterated the bank’s commitment to combating fraud and ensuring the safety of its customers’ finances.
He stated, “The tactics of fraudsters are constantly evolving, and it is imperative for consumers to be vigilant and informed about fraudulent activities. Through the Wema Bank Anti-Fraud Campaign, we aim to empower customers with the necessary tools to detect and handle suspicious engagements effectively.”
Wema Bank has taken proactive measures to investigate and disengage fintech partners involved in fraudulent activities, reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy towards fraud. The bank has intensified security checks and remains dedicated to rooting out fraudsters from its platform.
To facilitate the reporting of fraud cases, customers can escalate concerns connected to Wema Bank accounts via the bank’s active email platform, operational round the clock.
Through the ongoing anti-fraud campaign, Wema Bank has already identified and disengaged three fintech partners for fraudulent behavior, while four others have been suspended from its platform. The bank continues to conduct audits and reviews of fintech partners’ processes to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and customer protection.
