Ex Governor Willie Obiano arrested, detained in Lagos; Wife may be arrested for assault
Immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano has been nabbed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) hours after handing over power to Professor Chukwuma Soludo on Thursday, March 17, 2022.
Obiano was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja Lagos while attempting to board a flight to Houston Texas, United States of America (USA).
Confirming the arrest of the one-time banker to Global Patriot Newspapers (GPNews), the EFCC Spokesman, Wilson Uwuajaren said that Obiano had been on the watch list of the anti-graft agency for some time and was presently cooling his heels at the agency’s detention center in Lagos.
He was arrested for alleged money laundering and abuse of office. It is believed that he was trying to escape the eagle’s eyes of the EFCC by flying out immediately after the change of baton when many would be expecting that he would still be in Awka, but luck ran out on him as he was fished out and promptly taken into custody.
His wife, Ebelechukwu Obiano, was entangled in a slapping controversy with the wife of ex-Biafran leader and former Ambassador to Spain, Princess Bianca Onoh during the swearing in of Obiano’s successor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo in Awka, the State’s capital earlier today, Thursday. There are conflicting accounts of who slapped the other, but it is clear from video clips that Mrs. Obiano walked to Mrs. Odumegwu-Ojukwu where she was sitting to confront her before the slapping incident.
Those who say that Mrs. Obiano slapped Mrs. Biana say it is in her character while those who say Mrs. Bianca slapped Mrs. Obiano say that the ex first lady got what she deserved. There are indications that Mrs. Odumegwu-Ojukwu, a trained lawyer, may press charges against Mrs. Obiano and have her arrested, detained and charged for assault.
