The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has appealed to the Abia state government to rehabilitate their permanent orientation camp in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area of the state.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Julius Ekeh, made the appeal at the passing out ceremony of the 2021 ‘B’ Stream 1 Corps Members deployed to Abia, on Thursday, at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
Ekeh recalled that the camp was built in 2006 and handed over to NYSC in 2007.
He said that the camp was in dire need of government intervention in the area of fixing of leaking roofs, major structures and gulley erosion control.
Ekeh noted that the problem was due to constant usage and increase in corps members’ population.
The state coordinator requested the tarring of the internal road network as well as construction of durable drainage system towards the Ochendo-camp market axis in the camp.
According to him, these efforts will curtail the ravaging effects of the erosion menace which is currently affecting one of the Ochendo Hostels.
He expressed gratitude to Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu for being a father to the scheme, and to the people of Abia for their hospitality to the corps members.
Ekeh disclosed that a total of 940 corps members, made up of 406 males and 534 females concluded their one-year national service in the state.
The governor, represented by Mr. Chris Ezem, the Secretary to the State Government, congratulated the corps members for successfully concluding their service year.
He said that the government would continue to assist the scheme within available resources in provision of basic needs for its operations.
Mr. Samuel Elaiho from Edo received the State Honours Award and four others received commendation certificates for impacting positively on their host communities.
