High POS charges: Unical SUG directs campus POS operators to revert to old charges

By Sixtus Uket (Calabar)

The Student Union Government (SUG) of the University of Calabar (Unical), has directed all Point Of Sale/Service (POS) operators in the University to temporarily revert to the old charges for their services in the university.
The Student Union Government gave the directive Monday in a statement signed by the Executive President, Comrade Tyron Bassey and General Secretary, Comrade Ofem Francis.
The statement, which was entitled; “Notification to all POS Operators on campus and students,” was copied to the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, the Chief Security Officer, the Information Officer and DOBOC.
It explained that the directive was due to the hardship faced by the students in the institution arising from the exorbitant charges by the POS operators.
“It has come to our notice that POS operators whom have been given the liberty to operate on campus have exuberantly increased the charges fee for the services they provide.
“In consideration of the hardship that students are going through in meeting up with the school’s financial demands and the difficulty with withdrawal at the respective banks, prices of POS services are hereby reversed temporarily with immediate effect, pending when the situation stabilizes,” the statement said.
It maintained that the approved charges by the students Union Government for all services rendered by POS operators are as follows: N500 (N50), N1,000 (N100), N2,000 (N150) and N5,000 (N300).
Others are: N10,000 (N500) and N20,000 (N1000).
It warned that, “any POS Operator who refuses to follow the stipulated prices should kindly leave the school premises as failure to adhere to this directive will attract drastic actions by the Student Union Government.”
