Maritime security in West, Central Africa take centerstage at the United Nations

There was a press stakeout in the margins of the Security Council briefing on Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea recently.

The press briefing noted that 2023 marks 10 years of the signing of the Code of Conduct Concerning the Prevention and Repression of Piracy, Armed Robbery against Ships, and Illegal Maritime Activities in West and Central Africa, called the Yaounde Code of Conduct (YCC).

Ghana is the current chair of the Gulf of Guinea Commission, and the briefing also drew attention to the need to fully operationalize the complementary interregional maritime security mechanism referred to as the Yaounde Architecture, in view of the additional benefits that would accrue therefrom.
