Tax expert lauds FIRS, urges greater achievements in 2025

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has unveiled ambitious plans for 2025, following a year of significant milestones in 2024, a tax expert close to the agency has said.

With a focus on tax reforms, transparency and innovation, the agency, the source who spoke to our Reporter in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital said, seems determined to strengthen Nigeria’s tax system and drive economic growth.

The source noted, however, that one of the key issues awaiting resolution this year, is the passage of the Tax Reform Bill, which, he said, “is a critical legislation that is expected to transform tax administration in the country.”

He insisted that the tenure of the current Chairman of the FIRS, Dr Zacch Adedeji, “has been marked by strategic advancements in the area of modernisation of the country’s tax system,” pointing out that in 2024, the Service “prioritised transparency, technological integration, and efficient processes, resulting in improved revenue generation and increased public trust,” achievements, which he stressed, “have laid the foundation for the agency’s lofty goals for 2025.”

He noted that the FIRS Chairman has consistently been attributing the agency’s successes so far to collaboration and a strong alignment with the people, processes, and technology, quoting Dr. Adedeji as saying that the progress recorded by the Service so far “is a testament to teamwork and commitment to excellence.”

The tax expert noted further that building public trust has been a core concern of the Adedeji-led FIRS, pointing out that “in 2024, the agency worked hard to ensure taxpayers understood how their contributions were utilised, fostering a sense of shared responsibility in nation-building.” This approach, he counselled, should continue to guide FIRS’s operations in 2025.

As the new year begins, he further urged the FIRS to stay focused “on simplifying tax processes, improving communication, and leveraging technology to make tax compliance easier for Nigerians.” The agency, he stressed, “should reinforce the importance of tax payment as a civic duty while ensuring that the system is equitable and supportive of all taxpayers.”
