Manchester United were held to a 2-2 draw by Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final at Old Trafford, with goalkeeper Andre Onana once again under the spotlight for costly errors in the match on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
The Red Devils found themselves behind early in the first half when Thiago Almada’s free-kick somehow bounced over Onana’s outstretched arms and into the net – a moment the Cameroonian shot-stopper will want to forget.
Despite creating several chances through Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes, United struggled to find the breakthrough until just before the break. Leny Yoro headed home an equaliser from close range after meeting Manuel Ugarte’s volley to restore some belief for the home side.
United looked to have won it late on when substitute Joshua Zirkzee turned in Fernandes’ cross in the 88th minute. But just as the home fans began to celebrate, another lapse from Onana cost them dearly. The goalkeeper spilled a routine shot in stoppage time, allowing Rayan Cherki to pounce and tap in Lyon’s second goal.
The result leaves Erik ten Hag’s side with everything to play for in the second leg in France. But questions will once again be asked of Onana, whose errors have been a concern throughout the campaign.
