Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens started their CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B qualifiers on a strong note with a 2-1 win over Ghana’s Police Ladies on Sunday at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
The Prosperity Girls took the lead in the 12th minute through Shakirat Moshood before Emem Essien doubled the advantage in the 62nd minute.
Ghana’s Police Ladies pulled one back five minutes later through Mary Berko, but Bayelsa Queens stood firm to claim all three points in their Group B opener.
The match reignited the long-standing Nigeria-Ghana football rivalry, with Bayelsa Queens showing their strength early in the qualifiers.
The win gives the Nigerian champions a strong start in their quest to reach the semi-finals and eventually secure a spot at this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League.
Only the overall winner of the WAFU B qualifiers will qualify for the continental tournament, where champions from across Africa will compete for the title.
