2025 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival ends with colourful closing ceremony

After six days of sports rivalry, the 2025 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival, which began on Monday, September 8, came to an end on Saturday, September 13, before a capacity crowd at the Uyo Township Stadium, with the festival’s visioner, Pastor Umo Eno, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, declaring the games closed.

The festival’s final medals table reveals some interesting records.

Itu local government area soared to a total of 106 medals, comprising an impressive 70 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze, to emerge overall champions.

Uyo, the local government of the state ALGON boss, came a distant second, some 59 medals adrift of Itu, after amassing 47 medals that comprises of 22 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze, while Nsit Atai came closely behind in third place by winning 19 gold, 13 silver and 7 bronze medals.

Mbo, Etim Ekpo, Nsit Ubium, Ibesikpo/Asutan and Ini managed 1 gold medal each while 13 other LGAs fired blanks in the gold-medal category.

Eastern Obolo’s 1 silver medal at the games proved better than Ibeno’s 7 bronze and placed the former one place ahead of the latter in the standings. Essien Udim popped up the standings with just 1 bronze medal to show for their efforts to inadvertently ensure that each of the state’s 31 LGAs won at least a medal.

In the end, the 2025 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival, which had as its theme “Nurturing talents, promoting tourism”, witnessed the winning of a total of 196 gold, 189 silver and 242 bronze medals.
