Dr. Rambi Ibrahim Ayala Esq, Convener of the Coalition, who signed the lawyers’ statement, stated that Amupitan’s appointment, which was backed by the Council of State, is well deserved as he possesses the requisite expertise and integrity to lead Nigeria’s electoral umpire.
Professor Amupitan’s appointment had attracted divergent views since it’s announcement late last week, but Ayala, a renowned activist, philanthropist and politician together with his colleagues strongly stressed that the appointment reflects the President and Council of State’s commitment to merit and excellence.
“As a renowned academic and expert in his field, Prof. Amupitan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role, which will undoubtedly enhance INEC’s effectiveness.
“With the 2027 general elections looming, Nigeria needs a strong and independent INEC leadership to drive electoral reforms and ensure credible polls.
“We, therefore, humbly request the Senate to expedite action on the confirmation process to enable Professor Amupitan to hit the ground running and provide the much-needed leadership to INEC,” the statement emphasized.
