Kachikwu to re-evaluate appointees in petroleum ministry; says FG needs N413 bn for subsidy payments

Newly-inaugurated Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, is set to reassess and re-evaluate the positions of head of parastatals recently appointed into the petroleum ministry by the last administration.

The erstwhile Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), who gave the hint while addressing members of staff, and all the heads of agencies of the ministry shortly after assumption of office, disclosed plans to work closely with all heads of the agencies’ in order for them to understand the change agenda of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.’

According to Kachikwu, each of the managing directors would have to prove that he or she possesses the capacity to deliver on the change mantra that the new administration is looking for.

He noted that the ministry has lost a lot momen­tum as a result of the go­ings on in the past, adding that work is going to be at rocket pace to achieve directional change with a view to mapping out very clear deliverables.

The minister, who sought the corporation of the ministry’s staff for a cordial working relation­ship, added that ‘the minister’s portfolio is not one of just being in charge of NNPC, but being in charge of the total number of sub­sidiaries which are critical in the delivery of the main objectives of government.’

Meanwhile, Kachikwu, also Wednesday, unveiled President Muhammadu Buhari’s policy direction for the nation’s oil and gas sector.

This is as the minister also disclosed that Buhari has written to seek the National Assembly’s approval for an extra budget of N413 billion for payment of outstanding fuel subsidy claims to oil marketers.

He explained that although the money was approved by the President, the money has not reached the marketers because processes had to be followed in approving extra budgeting approval and urged the marketers to be patient.
