The win sees Barcelona retain the trophy, having earlier defeated Athletic Club in the semi-final. It also extends their record as the most successful club in the history of the Spanish Super Cup, with Real Madrid second on 13 titles.
Barcelona first lifted the Super Cup in the 1983/84 season and have continued to dominate the competition over the years, adding the latest title to an already impressive honours list.
The victory also ended two long-running trends. Barcelona became the first league champions in eight seasons to go on and win the Super Cup, and the first team to successfully defend the title since Pep Guardiola’s side achieved the feat between 2010 and 2012.
The latest success further underlines Barcelona’s strong record in the competition and adds another major trophy to the club’s collection.
