Manchester United beat Man City to boost top-four push

Manchester United produced a strong performance to beat Manchester City at Old Trafford, dealing a major blow to City’s Premier League title hopes.

Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu sealed a deserved victory for United and lifted the mood around Old Trafford after a difficult period.

The stadium came alive as United took control of the match, with Sir Alex Ferguson watching on from the stands. City striker Erling Haaland was largely quiet and was sarcastically applauded by home fans when he was substituted late on.

City stayed in the game for long spells thanks to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who made several fine saves to deny Patrick Dorgu, Amad Diallo, Casemiro and Mbeumo.

United eventually took the lead through a swift counter-attack. Captain Bruno Fernandes drove forward before releasing Mbeumo, who finished calmly from the left on his return from Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Eleven minutes later, United doubled their advantage. City defender Rico Lewis was caught out, allowing Dorgu to get in front of him and score from Matheus Cunha’s cut-back.

United had three goals ruled out for offside, while Diallo also struck the post late on. City failed to mount a serious comeback, with Haaland extending his run to just one goal in seven matches.

Pep Guardiola looked frustrated on the touchline as City’s winless league run stretched to four games, a result that also strengthened Arsenal’s grip on the title race.

United briefly moved up to fourth place, a position they struggled to reach under former manager Ruben Amorim.

There was early controversy when Diogo Dalot escaped a red card for a high challenge on Jeremy Doku, but United remained focused after that moment.

Defenders Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez were solid at the back, limiting City’s attacking threat, while goalkeeper Senne Lammens made a key save to keep a clean sheet. In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo impressed alongside Casemiro as United controlled the game.

At full-time, United fans celebrated loudly as their team claimed an important derby win and a statement victory over their rivals.
