Tinubu decorates Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police
President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, officially decorated Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the new Acting Inspector-General of Police at the State House, Abuja.
The appointment follows the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun on Tuesday, paving the way for Disu to take charge of the Nigeria Police Force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on the appointment, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that Egbetokun cited pressing family matters in his resignation letter. Multiple sources, however, indicated that the former IG was asked to step down during a meeting with President Tinubu on Monday evening.
President Tinubu accepted the resignation and approved Disu’s appointment in an acting capacity. A State House statement described Disu as having the “experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity” needed to lead the police during this critical period.
In line with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IG before transmitting his name to the Senate for confirmation.
Before this role, Disu served as Assistant IG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Lagos, and previously headed the Special Protection Unit at Force Headquarters, Abuja. He has also served as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, led the Intelligence Response Team, and commanded the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos.
The appointment may lead to the resignation of some senior officers in line with police tradition, with up to 20 senior officers expected to step aside.
