Ademola Lookman was the hero once again as Atlético Madrid defeated Girona FC 1-0 in their second-to-last league game of the season on Sunday.
The Super Eagles forward scored the only goal of the match to help Atlético continue their fight for third place in the La Liga table ahead of their final game against Villarreal CF.
Atlético came into the match full of confidence after beating Osasuna 2-1 in their previous game. Manager Diego Simeone once again trusted Lookman in attack alongside Antoine Griezmann, who was playing his final home match for the club before his expected move to Major League Soccer side Orlando City SC.
The home side started brightly and created several chances early in the game. Griezmann came close to scoring but was denied by Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, while defender David Hancko also hit the crossbar from a corner kick.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 21st minute when Griezmann sent a low cross into the box and Lookman reacted quickly to score from close range and give Atlético the lead.
Lookman thought he had added a second goal later in the first half, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Girona pushed hard for an equaliser after the break, but Atlético stayed organised at the back and held on for an important victory.
The goal was Lookman’s fourth in the league since joining Atlético Madrid during the winter transfer window from Atalanta BC. It also took his total tally to nine goals in all competitions this season.
The Nigerian forward played 63 minutes before being replaced as Atlético focused on protecting their lead. He completed most of his passes, created chances for teammates and remained dangerous throughout the match.
Lookman has now scored in back-to-back league games for the first time since joining Atlético Madrid and will hope to finish the season strongly when Atlético face Villarreal next weekend.
