Arsenal have won the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years after Manchester City failed to beat AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
City needed a win to keep the title race alive until the final day of the season. However, Bournemouth held Pep Guardiola’s side to a 1-1 draw to hand Arsenal the championship.
Junior Kroupi scored for Bournemouth in the 39th minute to shock the home fans and put City under pressure.
City pushed hard for an equaliser in the second half and eventually found one through Erling Haaland deep into stoppage time. But the goal came too late as Guardiola’s men could not score the winner they needed.
The final whistle sparked huge celebrations among Arsenal fans outside the Emirates Stadium, with more celebrations expected when the Gunners face Crystal Palace in their final match of the season on Sunday.
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice celebrated the achievement on Instagram by posting a picture with his teammates and writing: “I told you all … it’s done.”
The league title is Arsenal’s 14th in history and their first since the famous unbeaten “Invincibles” season under former manager Arsène Wenger in 2003/2004.
Manager Mikel Arteta has now ended Arsenal’s long wait for the trophy after guiding the club through several difficult seasons. Arsenal had finished second in the league for the past three seasons before finally lifting the title this year.
The North London club has impressed this season with strong defending and dangerous set-pieces. Arsenal have conceded only 26 league goals and kept 19 clean sheets in 37 matches.
Arsenal could still make this season even more special as they prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final on May 30.
