Peter Obi celebrates departed Archbishop Akubueze

Mr. Peter Obi, Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has paid glowing tribute to the late Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, Edo State.

Mr. Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, attended the Vigil Mass for the repose of the soul of His Grace, Most Rev. Akubeze at the Holy Cross Catholic Cathedral, Benin City and the Funeral Mass at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City, Edo State.

In a post on his X platform, Mr. Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), hailed the late Archbishop Akubeze as “a shepherd who sincerely dedicated his life to the service of God and humanity, with a deep concern for building a better society and improving the lives of the people he served.”

Mr. Obi also noted that as the departed highly respected cleric’s life of service, commitment to the Church, pastoral leadership, and strong dedication to the people, are being celebrated, “his life reminds us that true service is rooted in faith, compassion, sacrifice, and a genuine desire to make society better.”

Obi then prayed that Akubueze’s life of faith and service would continue to inspire, and that the good Lord will grant him eternal rest in perfect peace.

Akubeze served as Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City from 2011 to 2026. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him the metropolitan archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, Nigeria, effective on 28 March 2011.

He was born in Kaduna, Nigeria in 1956, was ordained a priest in 1987 and was consecrated Bishop in 2006.
