The registrar and chief executive officer of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria Prof Josiah Ajiboye has said Enugu State is the foremost state with regard to the production of quality teachers in the country.
He explained that with about 45,062, the state has the highest number of registered teachers.
Prof. Ajiboye disclosed this during a courtesy call on the governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, at Government House in the company of some executive members of the council.
He noted that his commendation was necessitated by the growing number of unqualified individuals who have illegally found their way into the teaching profession in the country.
He extolled the governor for the support he has been giving all the educational institutions in Enugu State to enable them to key into the programmes of the council, noting that their goal is to enhance the quality of teaching in the country.
Responding, Governor Ugwuanyi pledged his administration’s support for the council in the attainment of all its set goals, pointing out that the council’s importance as a regulatory body in the education sector is underscored by the mandate to ensure discipline and professionalism.
The governor stated that the level of development and advancement of any nation is determined by the quality of education available to its citizens, which in turn is dependent on the capacity, competence and commitment of the teachers.
He then called for the enthronement of high standards and the observance of international best practices in both the training and practice of teachers, in order to actualize the dream of a better society.
He also informed his guests that the Enugu State government is committed to reforms in the recruitment and continuous training of qualified teachers, as well upgrade of infrastructure and re-equipping of schools to make the education sector more result-oriented.
