2019 Elections: Gombe REC honored for outstanding performance

Resident Electoral Commissioner, Gombe State, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim

The Gombe state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Umar Ibrahim has been presented with a merit award by Like-minds Support for Good Governance in Africa following what they consider as his outstanding performance in overseeing the conduct of the last general elections in the state.

Country Director of the organization, Donatus Lawrence, while making the presentation, said Umar Ibrahim was nominated after thorough research, observation and monitoring of his conduct during the election. He said that it was discovered that his conduct was exceptional.
According to him, apart from overseeing the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in all the elections in the state, his curriculum vitae (CV) in public service was excellent and spoke volumes worthy of emulation by present and upcoming public servants.
He said that saying ‘thank you’ to him for standing tall in the face of many challenges would not be enough, but was a call for him to do more in the service of his father land.
Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters and Political Party Affairs, Hajiya Aishatu Jubril Dukku, while extolling the virtues of the REC commended him for being fair during the conduct of a bye election which her party lost.
Also speaking at the event, the Director-General in the Office of the Governor-elect, Gombe State, Barrister Mohammed Zubairu Umar said the performance of the REC was commended by all stakeholders during the general elections.
He said with people like Alhaji Umar Ibrahim overseeing elections in Nigeria, there is a brighter future for democracy to thrive in the country because of his fairness to all parties involved in the last election. He said the APC was in opposition but they had no problem with the way he handled electoral matters of the State.
In his response to the award, Alhaji Ibrahim, who assumed office as REC in the state in July 2017,   said his first pronouncement and promise to the public on assumption of office was to assure that there would be free, fair, accountable and transparent elections in Gombe State and that he is happy to have delivered.
He said that the credit would not only go to him alone but to all major stakeholders in the State without whom, he said, “we will not be celebrating this occasion.” He stressed that one of his challenges was the Continuous Voters Registration exercise which was poor at the beginning in Gombe State but ended being one of the best in the country.
“When we began the exercise, the results were poor but at the end and in conjunction with Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), we created rooms and added centres and made them to be mobile. We also did a lot of sensitization and at the end; we came from being the least to one of the States in the forefront in terms of the CVR”, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim stated.
