A medical expert with the Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi, Dr Habiba Ismail has revealed that having multiple sex partners leads to cervical cancer among women.
Dr. Habiba, who is a gynecology consultant, stated this while delivering a lecture during a one day Cancer Screening Exercise organised by National Association of women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi State chapter in collaboration with the PPFN, held at Maternal and Child Health Center Anguwan Kur Bauchi.
According to her, other factors that can lead to cervical cancer are early childbirth by a girl child, associated with sexually transmitted disease, smoking , sex with uncircumcised men, genetics factor and multiple delivery.
She explained that Cervical Cancer is a Viral disease which can be eliminated at an early stage, adding that it can be prevented through Immunization.
Dr Ismail also disclosed that death rate in cancer is equal to that of HIV and pregnancy related cases and then called for a serious public health campaign against the disease, which according to her is alarming, and advised women to go for Cancer screening for necessary action.
The medical expert therefore called on women groups in the state to support cancer patients , in order to give them a sense of belonging.
