
From: Ruth Yarnap, BauchiMembers of the media have been urged to be effective advocates of the rights of children in order to play their role in protecting them.
The UNICEF Chief of Bauchi Field Office, Mr Bhanu Pathak stated this on Wednesday while addressing a press conference as part of activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child CRC, held at the UNICEF Field office in Bauchi.
He said raising global awareness on the rights of children and putting children issues on the front burner of national issue is paramount because children are the most vulnerable members of the society.
According to him, three decades ago,world leaders took a momentous decision at the UN General Assembly, and brought into existence, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, CRC.
He lamented that despite the fact that 25 states of the Federation have enacted the Child Rights law, eleven states are yet to domesticate the Child Rights Act adding that majority of states are in the North East part of the country.
In the area of education, Mr Bhanu lamented the 10 million out of school children in the country and urged state governments, parents, communities, traditional and religious leaders and all stakeholders to ensure that children are enrolled in schools and complete a quality education.
