Why Tinubu lost in Lagos – Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has listed three possible reasons why his political mentor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, lost the February 25 presidential election in the state.

Sanwo-Olu made this disclosure in an interview on ARISE TV on Wednesday morning. The Governor listed the Muslim-Muslim ticket, Igbo presidency, and internal crisis within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state as reasons for the loss.

Sanwo-Olu said “We have been able to identify and look critically at what went wrong. The Muslim-Muslim ticket played a role because Lagos is also centre of a lot of Christian population and we had the information. So it’s there.

“The other reason is that some people said that from their own ethnic nationality, this is the first time that they are having their son on the ballot, so ‘na my pikin’, so we cannot force anybody. That’s the beauty of democracy.

“The third reason is that we ourselves have our own internal wrangling that we were not able to resolve fully before we went into the election.”

Aside Tinubu’s loss, the governor lamented the low voter turnout in Lagos State. APC pulled 572 606 to LP’s 582664 for the Presidential elections, PDP managed only 75 750 with the sum total plus that of other contestants far below the numbers from the former federal capital territory in previous elections.

Sanwo-Olu expressed worry over the turnout stressing it was an issue that needs to be critically looked into ahead of Saturday’s Governorship and State House of Assembly Elections.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is seeking a second term in office in the March 11 polls and faces stiff challenge from Labour Party’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Dr Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran popularly known as ” Jandor” of the People’s Democratic Party-PDP.
